Kwiyumya kwa AKA Group: From Collective Savings to Collective Transformation

In the heart of Katulani, 20 determined women under the Kwiyumya kwa AKA Group are proving that when women save together, they transform not only their households but their entire community.

What began as a shared vision to improve their livelihoods through collective savings became a life-changing reality in October 2024, when the group successfully accessed a KES 630,000 loan from Mpanzi SACCO to invest in water tanks.

For years, access to water had been a major challenge due to the unreliable rainfall patterns experienced within the region. Women spent hours walking long distances in search of water for their households, farms and livestock the time that could have been spent earning income or caring for their families.

“We used to spend so much time looking for water,” recalls one group member. “Sometimes we would walk long distances and by the time we returned home, the day was almost gone.”

Through disciplined savings, the group had built a trusted relationship with Mpanzi SACCO thus they were able to get a loan

“Our journey with Mpanzi SACCO has taught us that even small savings can grow into big opportunities,” says the group chairlady. “This loan was not just money—it was hope. We purchased and installed water tanks for group members and as a result, the time we used to fetch water reduced.

“We now have water close to our homes,” one member shares. “I save time, my children and livestock have clean water and I can now focus on my small business.”

Another adds, “Before this, water was a daily struggle. Now it is a resource we can depend on.”

For the women of Kwiyumya kwa AKA Group, this is only the start of their journey. They believe this first investment will help them grow their businesses, strengthen their financial independence, and build a better future through continued support from Mpanzi SACCO.

“Our dream is to continue growing,” says one member. “Today it is water tanks—tomorrow it could be land, agribusiness, or larger community projects.”

Another member smiles as she reflects on what lies ahead:

“Mpanzi SACCO has shown us that our dreams are possible. We now believe in what we can achieve together.”

Their story is a powerful reminder that access to affordable credit, when combined with collective action and determination, can create lasting transformation. For the women of Kwiyumya kwa AKA Group, the future is no longer something to wait for—it is something they are building together.
